Caio Pagin from Brazil is visiting the GRASSI Museum für Völkerkunde zu Leipzig to examine the collection of Hermann Meyer. In this lecture he will offer a glimpse into Herrmann Meyer’s journey to the Rio Xingú, in the heart of Brazil, during his two research expeditions between 1896 and 1898. Pagin will introduce this basketry collection he gathered, discussing its uses and significance. 

The subsequent workshop offers the opportunity to recreate one of the oldest known weaving patterns found in archaeological sites in Brazil—a beautiful diamond-shaped pattern that highlights the geometric form of the lozenge. This design, deeply rooted in ancient traditions, has been used across different cultures all over the world for millennia. In this session, we will recreate this pattern and discuss its history and significance.
